Background of the study
Viral hashtags have become powerful drivers of linguistic innovation in Nigeria, particularly on Twitter. These hashtags prompt users to coin new words and morphological forms, reflecting rapid cultural shifts and social mobilization (Ibrahim, 2023). Through processes such as blending, clipping, and affixation, digital neologisms emerge that challenge traditional morphological boundaries. This study examines how viral hashtags foster morphological innovation by analyzing various Twitter movements. It investigates the role of digital affordances, social influence, and collective identity in driving lexical creativity, resulting in novel word formations that quickly disseminate across online communities (Okafor, 2024). The research explores the extent to which these innovations affect conventional morphology and contribute to the evolution of Nigerian language. By providing a comparative analysis, the study seeks to enhance theoretical models of digital lexical innovation and offer practical insights for language educators and policymakers (Adebayo, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Although viral hashtags are instrumental in shaping language, there is limited systematic research on their impact on morphological innovation in Nigerian Twitter discourse. Many studies focus on social and political dimensions while overlooking the detailed processes of word formation, thereby restricting our understanding of how digital trends transform language (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze morphological innovations induced by viral hashtags.
  2. To identify the processes of digital word formation.
  3. To evaluate the impact on traditional morphological structures.

Research questions

  1. What new morphological forms emerge from viral hashtags?
  2. Which word formation processes are predominant?
  3. How do these innovations affect conventional morphology?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it reveals the transformative effect of viral hashtags on morphological innovation in Nigerian digital communication, providing insights that inform both theoretical frameworks and practical language planning (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to Nigerian Twitter hashtag movements; it does not include other platforms or offline language practices.

Definitions of terms
• Morphological Innovation: The development of new word forms.
• Viral Hashtags: Popular hashtags that drive language change.
• Word Formation: Processes that create new vocabulary.
